President Obama: 'Mad Men' Helped Me To Understand My Grandmother

obama grandparents 2012 06 01

You can stop wondering if "Mad Men" has ever over-exaggerated the alcoholism of the 60s.

According to President Obama, he pretty much lived through that with his grandparents.

He told David Maraniss, the biographer who's writing "The Story," about the President's life, that -- thanks to "Mad Men" -- he now understands where his grandparents were coming from. Madelyn Dunham, the POTUS's grandmother, rose from being a secretary to a vice president at a bank.

"That's where you started noticing her alcoholism," he explained.

OK, Mr. President. Would you say your grandmother was more Peggy Olson or Don Draper? Perhaps Roger Sterling?

We love Roger Sterling.

DiD yOu KnOw? ... Though Jon Hamm plays a very serious Don Draper on "Mad Men," he's actually really funny in movies like "Friends with Kids" and shows like "30 Rock." Watch one of his many hilarious SNL skits, here.
