NBC's Ann Curry almost made us cry this morning.
Yep, folks, she had a crying breakdown on the Today Show as she talked about today being her last day with the program.
"I'm sorry I couldn't carry the ball over the finish line, but, man, I did try," she said as tears rolled down her face.
This came after days of negotiation about her future on the morning show, which has taken a ratings nosedive since Ann replaced Meredith Vieira one year ago.
Although, she says she doesn't think she is to blame.
"I know I am not to blame for the ratings worries," she told USA Today earlier this week. "And my bosses have said to me there are many factors involved. There is no doubt that the rating wars have become meaner and less focused on our responsibilities as journalists," though she says some at do "brilliant work."
We are hearing that Savannah Guthrie will replace Ann.
Meanwhile, in her new job with NBC, Ann will lead a seven-person crew that will cover major news stories. (We're guessing this is how she will earn the rest of the $20 million she is owed by NBC in the next two years.)
We're told that execs think she is better suited as a field reporter, but we disagree. She is just as entertaining as any of those aging folks on the Today Show. And, hotter.
(I think they were just looking for someone to blame for getting stomped as TV goes through an inevitabe change to keep up with the WWW.)
Best of luck to you, Ann.
