Terrifying Trend Alert: The Japanese Are All About Developing Bagelheads! (Why?!)

alt

The latest trend in Japanese self-expression is so scary and bizarre that we have to tell you what it is in plain terms.

The Japanese are jamming massive needles filled with saline solution under their skin to create bagel-shaped tumors on their foreheads!

We’ll say that again.

The Japanese are creating bagel-shaped tumors on their foreheads!

National Geographic TV's show, "Taboo," featured the body-modification craze. But there’s not much of an explanation as to why this ever became popular in the first place.

Also, why bagel? Why not donut? Or Fruit Loop?

Justin Timberlake: I Brought Sexy Back. Now, I'm Bringing MySpace Back!

myspace 2012 9 26

Gather 'round children and learn the tale of social networking's descent through the ages and evolutionary line.

First there was Friendster, which begot MySpace, which begot Facebook, which withstood the rise of twitter and Google+.

And, most had forgotten about Myspace, until it dropped the capital S and announced a reboot this week.

Yeah, that's right, like a clingy ex, Myspace (formerly My_______) is back.

A promotional teaser video, which you can check out here, highlights all the new features and feel of the site. Big Instagram-y pictures and a focus on connecting artists and fans seem to be the major changes, but it's tough to really tell in the two-minute video. Of course, the new reboot isn't available to the general public yet and there's no word on when it will be, but you can sign up here to be a possible beta tester.

The savior of Myspace is Justin Timberlake, who chipped in with Specific Media to buy the failing social networking site from News Corp. last year. (Thus explaining why he's featured so heavily in the promo video.) According to reports, Justin will be pressuring his celeb friends to join and set up their own pages.

We can just see it now: JT trying to talk one of his Hollywood friends, probably Mila Kunis, into creating an account by saying something "I brought sexy back, now I'm bringing MySpace back!" or "Did you see 'The Social Network'? I know what I'm doing!"

We're all about it.

Pig Out While You Still Can: Serious Bacon Shortage 'Unavoidable' For 2013

bacon 2012 09 24

This is the way the world ends, folks: not with a bang, but with a bacon shortage.

That's right!

The National Pig Association in Britain recently announced that a drought causing less feed for the pigs of the world means that the amount of pork available next year will drop, and prices will rise.

On the bright side, maybe we'll see a decrease in heart disease next year? But, on the other hand, no bacon??

If you need us in 2013, we'll just be hanging out in the meat section of the grocery store, crying.

DiD yOu KnOw? ... The pork shortage might be a good thing, considering all the buzz this year from a study that found just how risky it is to eat meat. Read all about it, here.

R.L. Stine, Jewel, Junot Diaz Get Literal At The National Book Festival

alt

Hordes of authors and their fans filled the National Mall this past Saturday and Sunday for the Library of Congress' annual National Book Festival.

And, apparently, everyone has a new book.

Songstress Jewel was signing copies of her new children's book, "That’s What I’d Do," a lullaby dedicated to her newborn baby. Olympic Gymnast and Gold Medallist Dominique Moceanu was encouraging young gymnasts and promoting her series "Go for the Gold Gymnasts."

The major literary heavyweights pulled in two-hour-long lines of fans.

Famed "Goosebumps" author R.L. Stine was also there in all black (his "costume") autographing books for generations of fans. Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Junot Diaz ("This is How You Lose Her"), Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa ("The Feast of the Goat"), New Yorker Writer Jeffrey Toobin ("The Oath: The Obama White House vs. the Supreme Court") and Washington Post Reporter Bob Woodward ("The Price of Politics") drew some of the largest crowds. See a full list of authors here.

It was nice to see the masses gathering on the Mall for something other than taking inappropriate photos with the Washington Monument.

Study Claims Hamburgers Create More Air Pollution Than Diesel Trucks

polluting hamburgers 2012 9 20

Someone call Captain Planet.

It seems that cooking lunch at a burger joint causes more pollution in the air than a diesel truck.

According to a study from the University of California Riverside, commercially cooked hamburgers -- made on charbroilers -- create a damaging amount of smoke, water vapor, grease and other "particulate matter" that finds its way into the air.

Bill Welch, UC Riverside's principle engineer on the study, told a reporter that in comparison "an 18-wheeler diesel engine truck would have to drive 143 miles on the freeway to put out the same mass of particulates as a single charbroiled hamburger patty."

Thankfully, the same folks who put together the study were also able to come up a simple device to grab the particulates and keep them from getting up in the air.

No matter where you stand on the whole climate change/global-warming thing, you have to admit that this is the type of science we can all get behind – finding a way to save the environment without creating too much of an inconvenience when it comes to our delicious, delicious hamburgers.

German Government: You People Shouldn’t Use That Pesky Internet Explorer

IE logo 2012 9 19

If you have even a cursory understanding of web browsers, you probably understand that Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) is one of the worst.

Compared to similar programs it's clunky, slow, and doesn't really work well with most websites (even though it's the second most used browser program in the world).

Anyone with any computer skills will tell you to ditch it -- and now the German government is telling people to do the same.

It all goes back to a security flaw in the latest version of IE that was discovered over the weekend. According to experts, the error allows hackers to infect computers using the program to surf the web with bug that can take over the machine. All it takes is visiting the wrong website.

Microsoft is on the case and has released a temporary fix that users can download and install while they wait for the hole to be patched in the latest update of Internet Explorer, which should take about a week, but Germany's Federal Office for Information Security has released a public announcement advising people to use any of the other available browser programs like Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Opera.

Shh! Did you hear that noise? We're pretty sure every nerd in the world just released a collective international snort of contempt at having been told not to use IE.

As if!

This Election Day, Vote Captain America For President Of The United States

captain america 2012 09 18

Tired of all the bickering between the Obama-Biden and Romney-Ryan campaigns?

It seems that the creative team behind comic series "The Ultimates" is tired of it.

The newest story arc set for it involves a write-in campaign that ends with Captain America being elected as President of the United States. The storyline takes its inspiration from the madness surrounding the actual 2012 election. As Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso explains, "This is a metaphor for what goes on in real life, but on steroids."

Now, if only we could get Chris Evans to run for POTUS in that skin-tight Captain America suit. ...

DiD yOu KnOw? ... The folks over at GeekWire asked Comic-Con attendees which superhero they'd vote into the White House. Read the answers,

Zombie Apocalypse Gets Real-World Treatment at Security Conference

zombies 2012 9 17

We'll be honest: the idea of a zombie apocalypse frightens us a bit.

While it's the stuff of horror movies, comic books and TV shows - the idea of society collapsing due to people turning into undead mindless cannibals seems to be something that's getting more and more consideration as a very real possibility.

In fact, just last year the CDC published a tongue-in-cheek zombie apocalypse preparedness guide to get people thinking about real-life emergency readiness. And now, there's HALO Corp.'s annual Counter-Terrorism Summit (held in San Diego from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2).

The summit, which provides hands-on training for more than 1,000 members of various military, law enforcement and emergency response agencies, will take over the entire Paradise Point resort with an assortment of simulated scenarios utilizing sets, actors and special effects – all for training purposes. The situations will include hypothetical training conditions, like a hostage situation in a hospital, rescuing a pilot behind enemy lines ... and a zombie apocalypse.

OK, so maybe it's more like a lighthearted way to break the tension from all the serious training and celebrate Halloween, which happens to be in the middle of the conference.

But, as we like to say, if you're prepared for the zombie apocalypse, then you'll probably be ready for anything.

Soul Rocker Lionel Richie Surprises Emirates Airlines Gala Guests

alt

Hello, is it me you’re searching for?

Lionel Richie was the surprise celebrity guest at the Emirates airlines gala last week, which celebrated its inaugural flight to Washington, D.C., at the National Building Museum in our Nation's Capital.

The legendary soul rocker performed a setlist of hits, including “Brick House,” “Hello,” “Penny Lover,” and “Dancing on the Ceiling.”

Several of the airline’s flight attendants, in their signature uniforms, accompanied the event’s VIPs, including Lionel.

“They asked me if I was flying with them tomorrow (to Dubai), and after seeing how pretty they are, the answer is yes,” he told the crowd.

Sounds like his libido hasn't waned in his old age. We'll call that love.
