Not A Scaredy-Cat: Newt Gingrich Bonds With Cheetahs At The National Zoo

Who ever said that GOP-ers weren’t cuddly?

It turns out that former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is just a big teddy bear, despite that reptilian-sounding name.

The former presidential candidate is a dedicated animal lover, and he spent some quality time with the big cats at the National Zoo Thursday morning.

"Went to national zoo this morning – three cheetahs sleeping-wonderful time to go –zoo opens at 6am in summer-very quiet," he tweeted.

Newt has a list of his favorite zoos (not kidding), and as a 10-year-old he petitioned the Harrisburg, Pa., city council to start up a zoo of its own. His environmental policies might not be as earth-friendly as many activists would like them to be, but he does have a little bit of tree cred with the greener-than-thou crowd.

In 2007, he co-wrote a book called A Contract With the Earth with retired Palm Beach Zoo director Terry Maple (also featuring a forward by prominent environmental scientist and Harvard professor Edward O. Wilson). He also helped to stop a Republican effort to reform the Endangered Species Act in the ‘90s.

Newt’s connection with Earth’s critters isn’t that hard to believe. After all, he’s quite the political animal himself.

DiD yOu KnOw? ... In December 1994, Newt bought a Komodo Dragon from the National Zoo and gave it to Zoo Atlanta.
